Rwanda Institute of Computing Set to Launch as Country Expands AI and Cybersecurity Training

Unlike traditional classroom-based learning, RIC will adopt a project-based education model that combines academic instruction with practical experience, applied research, and innovation. Students will be expected to solve real-world challenges while developing technical and problem-solving skills needed in today's digital economy.
First Programmes Focus on AI and Cybersecurity
The institute will initially offer two undergraduate programmes: a Bachelor of Science in Artificial Intelligence and a Bachelor of Science in Cybersecurity.
The first two student intakes will be reserved for graduates of the Rwanda Coding Academy, allowing the government to build on the academy's track record of nurturing talented young programmers before gradually expanding admission to a wider pool of learners.
Artificial intelligence is increasingly transforming industries such as healthcare, finance, agriculture, education, and manufacturing, while cybersecurity has become essential as governments, businesses, and individuals rely more heavily on digital services. By focusing on these disciplines, RIC aims to prepare graduates for some of the fastest-growing technology careers.
Connecting Students With Industry
Beyond classroom learning, RIC plans to collaborate with technology companies, research institutions, and international partners to give students exposure to internships, innovation projects, and research opportunities.
These partnerships are expected to help students gain practical industry experience while encouraging the development of technology solutions that address local and regional challenges.
Supporting Rwanda's Digital Transformation
The establishment of the institute reflects Rwanda's broader ambition to become a regional technology and innovation hub. As the country continues to digitize public services and encourage innovation across sectors, demand for professionals in AI, cybersecurity, software engineering, and data science is expected to grow.
Government officials say RIC will contribute to closing the country's ICT skills gap while supporting entrepreneurship, research, and digital transformation. The institute also signals Rwanda's commitment to investing in advanced computing education that prepares graduates for both local opportunities and the global technology industry. Â
