Rwanda Takes Center Stage in Global AI Governance as Kagame Becomes UN AI for Good Commission Co-Chair

Rwanda has strengthened its position in global artificial intelligence (AI) leadership after President Paul Kagame was appointed Co-Chair of the AI for Good Impact Initiative Global Commission, a United Nations-backed body that aims to accelerate the responsible use of AI to address global challenges.

The appointment, announced on 22 July 2026, places Rwanda at the forefront of international discussions on AI governance and innovation, reinforcing the country's growing reputation as one of Africa's leading digital transformation hubs.

A Global Role in Shaping AI's Future

The AI for Good Impact Initiative, led by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in partnership with other United Nations agencies, brings together global leaders from government, business, academia, and civil society to promote the responsible development and deployment of artificial intelligence.

As Co-Chair, President Kagame will work alongside Barbados Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley to guide the Commission's efforts to ensure AI contributes to sustainable development, economic growth, and improved public services worldwide.

The Commission seeks to move beyond discussions about AI by supporting practical solutions that address challenges in healthcare, education, climate action, agriculture, and digital inclusion.

Kagame's appointment reflects Rwanda's continued investment in emerging technologies and its ambition to become a regional leader in artificial intelligence.
