OpenAI Launches ChatGPT Atlas: The AI-Powered Browser Challenging Google Chrome

OpenAI has officially entered the browser wars. On October 21, 2025, the company announced ChatGPT Atlas, an AI-powered web browser built with ChatGPT at its core, putting it in direct competition with Google Chrome, which commands over 72 percent of the global browser market.

A Browser That Talks Back

According to TechCrunch, ChatGPT Atlas reimagines web browsing by making conversation the primary interface. "We think that AI represents a rare once-a-decade opportunity to rethink what a browser can be about," OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said during Tuesday's livestream announcement.

Unlike traditional browsers where AI is an add-on, Atlas builds ChatGPT into the browsing experience from the ground up. Every webpage features an "Ask ChatGPT" button in the top-right corner that opens a companion sidebar, eliminating the need to copy and paste between tabs.

What Makes Atlas Different

The Always-Present Sidebar

MacRumors reports that the ChatGPT sidebar stays open while browsing, providing a constant companion that can summarize pages, compare products, answer questions about website content, edit and check code, and complete various tasks—all without leaving the current page. This is same behavior in Comet from Perplexity.

Browser Memories for Personalization

According to OpenAI's announcement, browser memories allow ChatGPT to remember context from sites you visit and recall it when needed. You could ask: "Find all the job postings I was looking at last week and create a summary of industry trends so I can prepare for interviews."

Browser memories are completely optional, viewable in settings, and can be archived or deleted anytime. Users control which sites ChatGPT can see using a toggle in the address bar, and clearing browsing history deletes associated memories.

Agent Mode: AI That Acts

CNBC reports that agent mode allows ChatGPT to complete tasks autonomously. Users can ask the AI to book restaurant reservations, flights, shopping, or document editing while they browse elsewhere.

You could give ChatGPT a recipe and ask it to find a grocery store, add all ingredients to a cart, and order them to your house. At work, ChatGPT can open and read past team documents, perform competitive research, and compile insights into a team brief.

Agent mode is currently in preview and available only to ChatGPT Plus, Pro, and Business users. Altman demonstrated a "take control" button and red "stop" button for when the browser takes autonomous actions.

Availability and Platforms

ChatGPT Atlas launched October 21 for macOS users worldwide, available to all free users. TechRadar reports that Windows, iOS, and Android versions are "coming soon," though no specific timeline was provided.

Privacy and Training Controls

According to OpenAI's announcement, by default the company does not use browsing content to train its models. Users must explicitly opt-in through "include web browsing" in data controls settings. Even with opt-in, webpages that block GPTBot will not be used for training.

Axios notes that users can browse in incognito mode, which isn't linked to ChatGPT accounts and isn't saved in browser history. Parental controls from ChatGPT carry over to Atlas, with new options to disable browser memories and agent mode.

Launching a browser is an expensive long-term bet requiring ongoing engineering investment, search partnerships, and distribution strategy. OpenAI CEO of applications Fidji Simo noted that users can "even manage your tabs by talking to ChatGPT, which is great if you're like me and always have way too many open."

Launch Incentives

To drive adoption, OpenAI offers increased ChatGPT data limits for seven days to users who set and maintain Atlas as their default browser. The promotion is open to both free and paid users, after which regular limits apply.

Challenges and Questions

Whether Atlas can dent Chrome's 3 billion user base remains uncertain. TechCrunch's testing found that early web-browsing AI agents work well for simple tasks but struggle with more complex automation users might want to offload.

VentureBeat noted that Atlas's memory feature showed mixed results in early testing, failing to recall recent searches that should have been captured.

For publishers and content creators, Atlas represents another front in the battle over AI-mediated content consumption. As traffic from bots is expected to surpass human traffic in coming years, the economic model of web publishing faces fundamental disruption.
