Great Lakes Regional Conference 2026 to Put Rwanda’s Youth at the Center of Digital Trade

Rwanda’s young innovators will have a new platform to explore how technology can open doors to entrepreneurship, digital trade and economic opportunity.

The Great Lakes Regional Conference 2026 is scheduled for October 17, 2026, at CST Muhazi Conference Hall in Kigali, bringing together students, entrepreneurs, innovators, policymakers and digital-rights advocates.

Where Technology Meets Economic Opportunity

Organised by Students For Liberty Africa, the conference will focus on “Digital Liberty & the Future of Trade.”

The theme comes at a time when digital technologies are changing how businesses reach customers, move money and participate in markets beyond their borders.

The organisers say the event will explore how Rwanda’s youth can use technology and innovation to participate in the growing digital economy.

AI, Blockchain and Digital Finance on the Agenda

The conference is expected to cover several areas shaping Africa’s technology landscape, including artificial intelligence, blockchain, digital finance, entrepreneurship and innovation.

Rather than focusing only on discussions, the organisers say participants will gain practical knowledge, connections and opportunities that can help them develop ideas into businesses and initiatives.

That could make the event particularly relevant to young people looking beyond traditional employment and considering entrepreneurship in technology.

Why Digital Trade Matters

The African Continental Free Trade Area is creating a larger market for African businesses. Digital tools can help entrepreneurs take advantage of that market without needing a physical presence in every country.

For a Rwandan startup, for example, an online platform can make it possible to sell services, communicate with customers and collaborate with partners across borders.

The conference's focus on digital liberty and trade therefore goes beyond technology itself. It raises a bigger question: how can young Africans use digital tools to participate more fully in Africa’s next economic chapter?

Kigali Set to Host 400 Participants

The organisers expect around 400 participants from across the Great Lakes region, creating an opportunity for students and emerging entrepreneurs to meet people working across technology, policy and business.

For Rwanda, the event also adds to Kigali's growing role as a meeting point for conversations around technology, entrepreneurship and Africa's digital future.
