Zoom has opened nominations for its inaugural Solopreneur 50 List, a recognition and grant program celebrating independent business owners leveraging artificial intelligence to build and scale companies without traditional employees.
The company announced Wednesday it will accept nominations through February 13 for the Zoom Solopreneur 50, which aims to honor independent creators, consultants, educators, inventors, and innovators across the United States who are redefining entrepreneurship through technology adoption. Individuals can nominate themselves or others by completing a form at zoom.com/solo50.
The Growing Solopreneur Economy
The initiative addresses a substantial and expanding segment of the American economy. According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, over 30 million small businesses operate in the United States, with 82 percent functioning without employees. A recent survey conducted by Zoom in partnership with Upwork, polling more than 1,000 small businesses including solopreneurs, found that 64 percent of respondents said they could not sustain their businesses without artificial intelligence capabilities.
The same research revealed 91 percent of small businesses saw returns on AI investments within one year, with respondents reporting that AI helped reduce business costs for 82 percent of participants, increased customer acquisition for 91 percent, and improved customer retention for 87 percent. These metrics suggest AI adoption has moved beyond experimental phases for many independent business operators, becoming integral to core operations.
Recognition Criteria and Benefits
The program targets businesses operating for at least 12 months with no full-time employees, spanning sectors including technology, design, wellness, media, and social impact. A jury drawn from Zoom's network will evaluate nominees across five dimensions. Originality of idea or execution, demonstrated financial performance, measurable business impact, authentic connection to culture and community, and influence in shaping conversations or markets.
Kimberly Storin, Chief Marketing Officer at Zoom, emphasized that artificial intelligence is expanding individual capabilities. Lisa Scheiring, Zoom's Global Small Business Advisor informally known as the Chief Solo Officer, noted that solopreneurs can quickly adopt and iterate with AI tools, unencumbered by legacy systems or lengthy approval processes, allowing them to test and apply new capabilities in real time.
Honorees will be announced in the second quarter of 2026 and will receive exposure through Zoom's platforms and media ecosystem, access to a community of peers and mentors, and eligibility for financial grants. The company stated that grants will be awarded to the top five honorees to accelerate their growth and impact, though specific grant amounts were not disclosed in the announcement.
The AI-First Advantage
The emphasis on AI integration reflects a broader shift in how solo operators compete against larger organizations. Scheiring highlighted that effective AI applications increasingly originate from solopreneurs rather than large companies, with independent operators using AI to solve real problems in real time, from gaining continuous visibility into operations to accessing expertise on demand to converting single hours of work into comprehensive marketing campaigns.
This speed and agility, according to Zoom, represents a genuine competitive advantage for what the company terms "armies of one." The ability to rapidly adopt new tools without navigating corporate bureaucracy or retrofitting existing systems allows solopreneurs to operate with sophistication levels previously requiring larger teams and budgets. The ZSP50 program forms part of Zoom's broader initiative to provide independent business builders with research, recognition, and practical tools to scale their ventures.

The company, which went public in 2019 and is headquartered in San Jose, California, positions itself as an AI-first work platform focused on human connection, offering collaboration tools including its Zoom Workplace platform with integrated AI Companion capabilities.
