X Launches Handle Marketplace: Rare Usernames Could Cost Millions

X has launched a Handle Marketplace that allows Premium subscribers to request and purchase inactive usernames. The marketplace offers both free and paid options for acquiring eligible handles, with rare usernames potentially priced anywhere from $2,500 to over seven figures.

The company describes the initiative as an "industry-first solution to redistribute handles that are no longer in use," available exclusively to Premium+, Premium Business, and Verified Organizations subscribers.

Two Categories of Handles

Priority Handles (Free)

Priority handles include full names, multi-word phrases, or alphanumeric combinations. Examples provided by X include usernames like @GabrielJones, @PizzaEater, and @ParadoxAI. Premium+ and Premium Business subscribers can request these handles at no additional cost. Requests are reviewed within three business days, and once approved, the handle is transferred to the user's account.

Rare Handles (Paid)

Rare handles consist of short, generic, or culturally significant usernames. Examples include @Pizza, @Tom, and @One. These handles are distributed through two methods:

• Public Drops: Some rare handles will be given away for free based on merit. X will consider a user's engagement and past contributions to the platform when deciding who receives these handles. Multiple users can apply.
• Direct Purchases: Other rare handles will be available through an invitation-only process with fixed prices determined by factors including popularity of the word, character length, and cultural significance.

How the Marketplace Works

Users can search the marketplace for available handles and submit requests. If a specific inactive handle is not currently listed, users can register their interest and add the handle to their Watchlist. X will notify them if it becomes available.

When a user secures a new handle through the marketplace, their previous username is frozen and becomes unavailable to others. X has indicated it may introduce a paid redirect option in the future that would forward traffic from a user's old handle to their new one.

Subscription Requirements and Retention

Access to the Handle Marketplace is limited to Premium+ subscribers ($16 per month), Premium Business subscribers ($42 per month), and Verified Organizations ($1,000 per month). The marketplace functions as an ongoing subscription-based service rather than a one-time perk.

For priority handles obtained for free, users must maintain their Premium+ or Premium Business subscription to retain the handle. If they downgrade or cancel, they automatically revert to their original username. However, rare handles purchased through direct sale can be kept even if the subscription is canceled.

Why X Created the Marketplace

X explained on its help page that it launched the marketplace instead of releasing inactive handles at once to prevent bot spam and misuse. The company stated the marketplace "allows for fair and secure distribution through a controlled process."

The initiative aligns with Elon Musk's ongoing efforts to monetize X's ecosystem since acquiring the platform in 2022. Musk first hinted in late 2023 that the company would explore reclaiming and reselling inactive usernames as part of efforts to clean up legacy accounts.

Industry Context and Concerns

Andrew Allemann, publisher of Domain Name Wire, told Engadget there are similarities between X's plan and the marketplace for expired domain names. He noted that people have been buying and selling handles off X for years without the company receiving any revenue.

However, Allelman expressed concerns about X's terms, which allow the company to reclaim handles if they become inactive. X's current inactive account policy defines an inactive account as one that hasn't been logged into for 30 days. "I would definitely want a firmer contract if I were to pay money for a handle," Allemann stated. "I would want some rights baked into a contract that says it can't just be taken away."

Part of Broader Revenue Strategy

The Handle Marketplace represents another revenue stream for X as the company seeks financial stability amid ongoing advertiser pullback since Musk's takeover. According to Tekedia, the initiative adds a tangible, status-driven incentive for users to remain subscribed at higher tiers.

Critics argue that placing rare handles behind a paywall could erode X's culture of open participation, effectively pricing out regular users from premium digital identity.
