SOLVIT AFRICA Joins National Dialogue on Expanding Rwanda's Digital Apprenticeship Opportunities

SOLVIT AFRICA joined the Rwanda TVET Board (RTB), the International Labour Organization (ILO), the Ministry of ICT and Innovation, and private sector leaders for a high-level breakfast meeting in Kigali to discuss the Quality Apprenticeship Program. The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration between employers and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions to better prepare young people for careers in Rwanda's growing digital economy. 

Strengthening the Link Between Education and Employment

As Rwanda accelerates its digital transformation agenda, ensuring that graduates possess practical, industry-relevant skills has become increasingly important. The Quality Apprenticeship Program seeks to bridge the gap between classroom learning and workplace experience by encouraging employers to provide structured apprenticeship opportunities that equip young people with real-world experience.

Participants also discussed ways to increase private sector involvement in shaping Rwanda's digital talent pipeline, recognizing that collaboration between employers and educational institutions is essential for producing graduates who can meet the demands of the modern workforce.

Employers Highlight the Impact of Apprenticeships

During the discussions, employers that have previously hosted internships and apprenticeship programmes shared positive outcomes from their experiences. Several companies reported that successful internships had led to permanent employment opportunities, while others emphasized the value of continued mentorship in supporting young professionals as they transition into the workplace.

These experiences demonstrated how work-based learning can improve employability while helping businesses identify and develop future talent.

Supporting Rwanda's Digital Jobs Vision

The Ministry of ICT and Innovation reaffirmed its commitment to the Quality Apprenticeship Program, linking the initiative to Rwanda's ambitious goal of creating 1.5 million digital jobs within the next five years. By strengthening partnerships among government, industry, and training institutions, the programme is expected to play a key role in building a workforce equipped with the practical skills needed to support the country's growing digital economy.

As demand for digital talent continues to increase, collaborative initiatives such as the Quality Apprenticeship Program demonstrate the importance of connecting education with industry to create sustainable employment pathways for young people while supporting Rwanda's long-term technology and innovation ambitions.
