Rwanda Scales Zipline Autonomous Delivery Nationwide

Rwanda is set to become the first country in the world to achieve full nationwide drone delivery coverage, following an expansion agreement with Zipline, a global leader in autonomous logistics. This milestone promises to revolutionize healthcare, logistics, and access to essential supplies across the country.

Expanding Drone Coverage Across Rwanda

The partnership now covers over 11 million citizens, connecting both urban and remote areas. Zipline’s next-generation Platform 2 (P2) drones, capable of vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL), will deliver medical supplies, blood, vaccines, and other critical items directly to hospitals and clinics.

A new long-range hub in Karongi joins the existing hubs in Muhanga and Kayonza, extending services to 2.9 million people in Rwanda’s Western region. With this infrastructure, Rwanda becomes the first nation fully served by a drone-based delivery network, ensuring faster and more reliable logistics across all districts.

Technology and Innovation at the Core

Rwanda will also host Zipline’s first overseas research and development (R&D) hub, dedicated to testing next-generation drones, software platforms, and logistics solutions. This facility will allow engineers to innovate locally while addressing Africa-specific delivery challenges.

The drones operate autonomously, navigating with precision GPS and real-time data systems, allowing deliveries even in difficult terrain or during adverse weather conditions. This technology not only improves efficiency but also reduces human error in urgent deliveries.

Impact on Healthcare and Jobs

Zipline’s services have already contributed to a 51% reduction in maternal deaths by ensuring rapid delivery of blood and medical supplies. With the nationwide rollout, these benefits are expected to expand, saving more lives and supporting Rwanda’s health system.

The expansion will also create around 350 high-skilled jobs, from drone operations to maintenance and software development, boosting local expertise in autonomous technologies and advanced logistics.
