The Rwanda Polytechnic Skills Challenge 2026 Hackathon officially concluded on Thursday, showcasing how TVET students are developing practical solutions for real industry challenges in Rwanda.

The event brought together graduating students, industry partners, and education leaders after more than two weeks of innovation, teamwork, and hands-on problem-solving.

Students Tackle Real Industry Challenges

This year’s edition focused on giving students direct exposure to industry needs through practical projects instead of theoretical exercises.

Out of 135 teams that applied, 48 graduating students were selected to participate in the competition. The students formed 18 teams and worked on six challenges provided by industry partners including Inyange Industries, Airtel Rwanda, REG, REMCO, GAMICO Ltd, and De Lorenzo.

The challenges were grouped into three research clusters:

  • Sustainable Energy

  • Transformative Manufacturing

  • Digital and Social Transformation

Students developed solutions ranging from AI systems designed to fight vandalism in power infrastructure to smart city training laboratories, solar-powered systems, and manufacturing technologies.

Government Calls for Stronger Industry Collaboration

During the closing ceremony, Minister of State for Education Claudette Irere said “the hackathon reflects Rwanda’s vision of building a knowledge-based economy driven by skills and innovation”.

She noted that Rwanda Polytechnic is helping students move beyond classroom learning by solving operational challenges faced by industries.

Irere also encouraged private sector companies to continue supporting young innovators and to see students as future contributors to Rwanda’s industrial growth.

Preparing Job-Ready Graduates

Rwanda Polytechnic Vice Chancellor Dr. Sylvie Mucyo said “the Skills Challenge demonstrates the institution’s commitment to competence-based education that responds to market needs”.

According to her, the hackathon gives students an opportunity to apply their technical knowledge in real working environments while collaborating with industry professionals.

She added that initiatives like the hackathon support Rwanda’s broader goals under Vision 2050 and the National Strategy for Transformation (NST2), which prioritize innovation, digital transformation, and industrial development.

Winning Teams Recognized

The event concluded with the recognition of winning teams across the different research clusters.

Some of the awarded projects included:

  • AI-based solutions to fight vandalism in power infrastructure

  • Smart city training laboratories for TVET institutions

  • Solar energy systems for pumping and lighting

  • Hydraulic press systems for manufacturing

  • Tin recovery systems

Rwanda Polytechnic thanked participating students, mentors, and partner companies for contributing to the success of the 2026 Skills Challenge Hackathon. For more info, visit RP Skills Challenge 2026 Edition: Hackathon
