Nova Impact: Building Africa’s Next Technical Workforce
AI Quick Summary
In many emerging economies, technology is often seen as a tool for the elite. However, a new question has emerged regarding talented minds priced out of traditional education. For those who cannot afford university or expensive bootcamps, the digital career path is often blocked. In Ghana, Nova Impact was designed to solve this systemic gap. By focusing on youth excluded by financial barriers, the organization turns "potential" into "functional skill," ensuring the country’s digital future is inclusive of everyone, regardless of their background
The Foundation and Philosophy of Nova
Nova is a technology-driven non-profit bridging the gap between marginalized youth and the tech sector. Established in 2025 by Yaoseh Obed, Festus Harlley, and Celestina Aidoo, it responds to an industry outpacing traditional education.
The founders recognized that waiting for institutional change left talented individuals behind. Consequently, they launched Nova as a homegrown, community-led engine for change. The organization has directly impacted over 200 youth through tuition-free workshops and reached 2,500 more indirectly, proving a "maker-focused" model generates high-level technical results.
How Nova Operates
Built on "functional sovereignty," Nova’s model ensures youth don't just use technology; they own and build it. The curriculum is engineered to meet global technical demands through three core pillars:
Digital Skills Development & Innovation: Nova focuses on equipping young people with relevant digital competencies and promoting tech-driven innovation. Through initiatives like the Ghana Youth Tech Summit which draws about 2,500 participants and the Campus Tech Drive, young Ghanaians gain hands-on training in coding, AI fundamentals, Blockchain, and cybersecurity while also engaging in collaborative knowledge sharing, networking, and entrepreneurship opportunities to drive national development.
Gender & Inclusion in STEM: Nova Impact seeks to bridge the gender gap in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by empowering young women and girls through inclusive learning and mentorship. The STEMinist Program creates safe and supportive spaces for females to explore STEM fields, build confidence, and develop skills needed to thrive in a tech-driven future. Over the years, the organization has provided tuition-free workshops for young ladies in Ghana, where 20 of them took part in Digital Marketing, 30 in Data Analytics, and 20 in digital skills and entrepreneurship, and certificates were provided after completion at the STEMinist conference to empower and celebrate their achievements.
The Nova Venture Fund Pitch: A platform to support young innovators and entrepreneurs' scaling their ideas and a rigorous technical incubator moving concepts from theory to reality. 15 selected innovators undergo intensive mentorship to transition "back-of-the-napkin" ideas into market-ready startups, fostering a culture of job creation over job seeking.
Climate Tech & Sustainability: Focusing on the intersection of technology and environmental responsibility, this theme promotes the development and deployment of innovations that support climate resilience, adaptation, and sustainable livelihoods. The Climate Smart Technology Initiative works to accelerate the transition to low-carbon economies while fostering eco-friendly entrepreneurship and just development. Nova Impact held a design thinking webinar on the environmental pollution challenge in Ghana; specifically illegal mining, also called Galamsey for the youth to brainstorm and find solutions to reduce the impact of these practices.
While currently refining this "maker" model in Ghana, the vision is Pan-African expansion. To drive this, Nova is inviting technical collaborations to align with a mission populating the tech ecosystem with industry-ready youth. By centering technology as the primary engine for economic empowerment, Nova is closing the digital divide and turning a "left-behind" generation into the architects of Africa’s future. As co-founder Allan Koth notes, Africa's future will be shaped by the opportunities we create today. At Nova Impact, we are building digital bridges that connect talent to markets, ideas to execution, and ambition to real economic growth across the continent.”
