Rwanda has taken another step toward strengthening its digital workforce with the launch of the Industry Connect Series, a new initiative aimed at linking students with the country’s growing tech industry. The program brings together key players to better prepare young talent for real-world opportunities.
Building Stronger Industry-Academia Links
The initiative started with a collaboration between the Ministry of ICT & Innovation, the University of Rwanda – College of Science and Technology (UR-CST), and several companies in the Global Business Services (GBS) sector.
Participating companies include The Gym (software development trainee program), TestSolutions Rwanda Ltd., TeKnowledge, and Awesomity Lab. These organizations are working together to provide students with insights into industry expectations and career pathways.
During the launch, Yves N. Iradukunda, Minister of State, emphasized that this marks the beginning of a long-term effort to position UR-CST as a hub for future-ready tech talent in Rwanda.
Connecting Students to Real Opportunities
As part of the event, company representatives and young professionals engaged students through a panel discussion. The session focused on:
Practical skills needed in today’s digital economy
Career pathways in the GBS sector
Real-world experiences from young professionals
These conversations gave students a clearer understanding of what employers are looking for and how they can prepare themselves for the job market.
Supporting Rwanda’s Digital Economy
The Industry Connect Series aims to address a key challenge in Rwanda’s tech ecosystem: the gap between academic learning and industry needs. By creating direct engagement between students and employers, the initiative helps ensure that graduates are better equipped with relevant, in-demand skills.
Organizations like Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator are also supporting this effort by promoting youth employment and skills development across Africa.
Looking Ahead
With Rwanda continuing to invest in its digital transformation, initiatives like the Industry Connect Series play an important role in building a skilled workforce. Strengthening collaboration between universities and industry could help unlock more opportunities for young people and support the country’s growing tech sector.
