Africa faces millions of problems requiring experienced product builders, yet a critical shortage of skilled product leaders threatens innovation across the continent. To address this gap, IdeaRise Circle Connect launched Connect Events on November 26, 2025, at Digital Transformation Center in Kigali with an ambitious mission of accelerating the rise of 1,500 product leaders by 2030.
The inaugural IdeaRise Connect monthly event drew more than 30 product enthusiasts who learned from Annu Augustine, an expert product management coach and founder of NedRock from South Africa. Her talk, "Product Delivery: Building What Matters," introduced participants to the critical discipline of product discovery, a continuous process that doesn't stop when development begins.
The Power of Collaboration: The Product Trio
Augustine emphasized that successful product discovery requires collaboration among three key roles; developers/engineers, designers, and product managers, collectively known as the "product trio." While each brings different responsibilities and expertise, working together during product discovery significantly reduces risks and increases the likelihood of building products that customers actually want and use.
She said that despite having different responsibilities, working together during product discovery ensures that the product is a success and reduces risks involved in product development.
Five Critical Risks in Product Development
Risks Identified and Mitigated During Product Discovery:- Value Risk: Will this product be bought? Will users use it? Is there value for them?
- Usability Risk: How will users learn to use it? Is it easy for them?
- Feasibility Risk: Can our engineers build this?
- Viability Risk: Does it work for our business? Can we market it? Can we fund it?
- Ethical Risk: Should we even build this?
Augustine stressed that collecting evidence by talking to stakeholders and users as much as possible reduces risk and increases confidence in building products. She also said while answering a question that modern AI tools now enable product teams to achieve more with fewer resources.
Hands-On Innovation Workshop
The session moved beyond theory when participants engaged in practical exercises using familiar everyday products. Attendees were challenged to refine these products and introduce innovations; an engaging, hands-on approach that brought product discovery techniques to life. The interactive format allowed participants to immediately apply the frameworks Augustine presented, transforming abstract concepts into tangible skills.
Five Essential Mindsets for Great Product Builders
While concluding, she shared the mindsets necessary for effective product development. Great builders should be:
- Outcome-oriented instead of focused on product outputs
- Customer-centric in all decisions and priorities
- Collaborative across functions and disciplines
- Visual in communication and documentation
- Experimental in approach and iteration
Building a Product-Oriented Community
Richard Rusa, co-founder of IdeaRise Circle, emphasized that the November 26 event represents just the beginning of an ambitious community-building effort. The goal of all this is to ensure that there are people who are product and outcome-oriented instead of just project and outputs.
IdeaRise Circle addresses a fundamental challenge in Africa. Because we have talented builders, but many lack the structured frameworks, collaborative approaches, and customer-centric mindsets that distinguish great products from mediocre ones. By creating a community where product managers and leaders share knowledge through monthly events and ongoing programs, IdeaRise Circle aims to systematically close this skills gap.
The initiative recognizes that building 1,500 product leaders by 2030 requires more than occasional training sessions. It demands sustained community engagement, peer learning, practical application, and access to experienced mentors like Augustine who can guide emerging product managers through real-world challenges.
As Africa's digital economy expands and startups tackle continent-specific problems in agriculture, healthcare, education, fintech, and infrastructure, the need for skilled product leaders becomes increasingly urgent. IdeaRise Circle positions itself as the catalyst for this transformation; creating not just individual success stories, but a systematic pipeline of product talent equipped to build solutions that genuinely matter.
With monthly events planned and additional programs in development, the IdeaRise Circle community invites product enthusiasts, aspiring product managers, and experienced leaders to join this movement. Thir main goal is to shift Africa's builder culture from project completion to product impact, from outputs to outcomes, and from building features to solving real customer problems.
