Kigali, 3 February 2026 – Heifer International Rwanda has officially launched the 2026 AYuTE Challenge, a nationwide competition inviting young Rwandan innovators to develop technology-enabled solutions that address critical challenges faced by smallholder farmers. The announcement was published on 3 February 2026, highlighting an expanded prize pool and increased support for youth-led agritech ventures.
The AYuTE Challenge Overview
The AYuTE Challenge — short for Agriculture, Youth and Technology — is Heifer’s flagship youth agritech innovation programme designed to identify, support, and scale scalable agritech enterprises in Rwanda’s agriculture sector. In 2026, the total cash prize has been raised to RWF 65 million, up from RWF 50 million in the previous edition, signalling stronger commitment to youth-driven agricultural transformation.
Who Can Apply
The competition is open to youth-led startups and innovators aged 18–35, based in Rwanda, with technology-driven solutions that enhance agricultural productivity, improve farmer incomes, or strengthen value chains. Applications are open until 27 February 2026 via an online portal.
Impact and Success Stories
The launch builds on the success of past participants. Mugeni Niyidukunda, founder of Avocare Ltd and first runner-up in the 2025 edition, shared that “The AYuTE Grant has been a transformative catalyst for Avocare Ltd… allowing us to expand production, create jobs, and strengthen partnerships with farmers nationwide.”
Tresor Gashonga, CEO of Incuti Foods and winner of the 2025 challenge, said the funding enabled his business to increase production capacity and expand market reach while creating youth employment.
Why It Matters
Rwanda’s agriculture sector employs more than 60 per cent of the population, yet productivity and resilience remain constrained by traditional practices and limited access to digital tools. The AYuTE Challenge seeks to bridge this gap by supporting innovative agritech solutions that can uplift smallholder farmers, promote youth entrepreneurship, and contribute to national food security and economic growth.
By combining finance, mentorship, and business development support, AYuTE helps young agripreneurs transition from ideas to market-ready ventures — strengthening Rwanda’s agritech ecosystem and positioning youth at the centre of agricultural innovation.
