Web: Surface, Deep and Dark. How do they differ?

It is very hard to find someone who doesn’t know what the internet (the web) is. We all use it to search for information, communicate with friends and families, and some of our careers are based on the Internet. But would you believe me if I said that a big part of the information on the internet is not accessible to the public, in fact, you can not access them if you are a normal internet user.

In this article, we are going to talk about categories where that information is accessible and how you can be able to access that information.

The Surface Web

This is the public part that we all have access to. When you search for a query on Google, the information you get is a part of the surface web. The information we are able to read from our favorite social media platforms is all public, the videos you watch. Those are all parts of the surface web.

It is interesting that even though anyone with the Internet can be able to access this information, it does not make up more than 10% of all information on the Internet. Which is why we have another category.

The Deep Web

Surprisingly, this part contains more than 80% of all information on the web, but it is not open to the wide public. You can access this information, only if you are authorized to do so. Take an example of your company’s data. It is a lot of information, and it is hosted on the internet (most likely) or intranet, but a few people have access to it. This is only your company, all corporations in the world, have this data, that they hold.

This data in the deep web is mostly confidential and it is the one that hackers will likely steal and sell. And protecting it, is what cyber security experts are doing. Not everyone can access it, but if the owner gives you access, you will access it, and you can not search for it on Google (except if the owner does not care about security).

The Dark Web

Here, things get a little bit controversial. Most people when they hear the dark web, they think of hackers. But this is not only for hackers. Anyone can access information on the dark web if they know how to. This is the only tricky part. If you don’t know how to access it, you can not have access to it. The dark web is almost like another internet that is very private, and accessible to very few who want to browse anonymously, and sometimes want to buy or sell illegal commodities.

No wonder people have this stereotype, because this is the place where, if you want to sell weapons, drugs, people, hire a hitman, or sell top secrets, you have to use the dark web. To access this web, you use special software like Tor Project and websites on the dark web do not use normal domain names. Their top-level domain is .onion which is related to the security you can get from the onion covers.

This is not a new topic, but it is an important topic to know about if you use the internet. As you use the internet, you have to understand that, just because you don’t see some information, it doesn’t mean that that information does not exist. You just have to look in the right place.
