Conakry Hosts Historic Transform Africa Summit: AI For Africa

For the first time in West Africa, Guinea's capital Conakry is hosting the continent's premier digital transformation gathering as the 7th Transform Africa Summit unfolds from November 12-14, 2025, at the Radisson Blu Hotel. Under the theme "AI for Africa: Innovate Locally, Impact Globally," the summit organized by Smart Africa has brought together Heads of State, ministers, private sector leaders, and innovators to chart Africa's course in artificial intelligence—a technology that could either be the continent's greatest equalizer or another source of global inequality.

Africa currently accounts for only about 3% of global AI talent, according to the African Union, which declared artificial intelligence a strategic priority for the continent's inclusion and competitiveness in 2025. Smart Africa, launched in 2013 in Kigali by seven African heads of state, now counts more than forty member countries representing over one billion inhabitants. The Innovate Hub brings together AI startups, researchers, academia, investors, and policymakers to collaborate and unlock pathways for scale. At its heart is the Talent & Skills Marketplace, connecting Africa's brightest minds—students, developers, digital entrepreneurs—with hiring companies, governments, and impact-driven investors. Several high-impact deliverables are being unveiled, including a new digital platform to coordinate Africa's innovation stakeholders, a strategic investor roundtable, and a capacity-building bootcamp for entrepreneurship enablers.

The Transform Hub serves as a collaborative think space where bold ideas and frameworks come together to shape the ethical, secure, and inclusive governance of AI and data across Africa. It convenes regional policy dialogues on interoperability and data exchange, and technical working sessions on policy harmonization in digital public services. Central to this agenda is the Smart Africa Trust Alliance (SATA)—Africa's flagship framework for enabling trusted cross-border data flows, supporting data sovereignty, and laying the foundation for pan-African collaboration on AI development and deployment.

Guinea's Historic Moment

For Lacina Koné, Smart Africa's Director General and CEO, the task now is to transform Africa's relative lag in AI into a growth lever. His vision rests on concrete facts: the rapid expansion of tech ecosystems in major African cities, the proliferation of AI startups in health and fintech, and public efforts to equip the continent with a unified strategic framework. "AI represents Africa's opportunity to innovate locally and impact globally," Koné stated. "The Transform Africa Summit is where Africa will showcase its digital leadership to the world."

The previous summit, held in Zimbabwe in 2023, attracted five Heads of State, 44 ministers, and thousands of delegates from across Africa and beyond, setting a high bar for this year's gathering. Early indicators suggest Conakry is meeting and exceeding those expectations, with robust participation from both African leaders and international partners committed to supporting the continent's digital transformation.

The summit addresses major challenges including data governance, digital inclusion, skills development, innovation financing, AI ethics, and technology adoption in sectors such as agriculture, health, education, and energy.
