According to The New Times, the inaugural 2025-2026 class includes 30 fully-funded students—15 boys and 15 girls—from eight African countries.
A Bold Mission for African STEM Excellence
Designed as a pan-African hub for the continent's brightest young minds, AOA aims to prepare students not just for global academic competitions but for leading roles in AI, technology, and advanced problem-solving across Africa. The school's curriculum is rooted in international Olympiad standards while incorporating African values and perspectives.
"The foundation of AI is strong math ability, and if the African continent is going to be able to compete globally, it needs to develop its own pipeline of strong math talent," said Gaidi Faraj, co-founder and Head of School at AOA. "It is important for us to develop a generation that is versed in deep mathematical and problem-solving skills for us to build solutions for the continent that are rooted in an African perspective."
Rising Stars Programme: Invitation-Only Admission
Admission to AOA is by invitation only through the Rising Stars programme, which scouts exceptional talent from underrepresented and lower-quintile schools across Africa. The programme identifies promising students through online training, in-person camps, and participation in national Math Olympiads.
Full Scholarships Provided: Selected students receive comprehensive scholarships covering tuition, boarding, uniforms, and travel expenses—removing financial barriers to accessing world-class STEM education.
In Kenya alone, four students from Alliance Boys High School, Lukenya High School, and Mangu High School earned scholarships after excelling in the Pan-African Rising Stars Mathematics Contest. The programme has also identified talent in Nigeria, with two Nigerian students invited to join the inaugural class.
Rwanda Government Backs Initiative
Rwanda's Minister of Education, Joseph Nsengimana, expressed strong support for the academy's launch, emphasizing its alignment with Rwanda's national goals.
"This initiative aligns with Rwanda's national goal to strengthen STEM education and nurture future leaders," Minister Nsengimana stated. "We acknowledge the need for collaboration from various stakeholders—public and private sectors, education institutions, and international donors—believing that the academy will significantly contribute to Rwanda's educational and developmental goals."
From Short-Term Camps to Long-Term Investment
Co-founder and Executive Director Arun Shanmuganathan's experience building the Rwandan Math Olympiad team and supporting African participation in both the Pan-African and International Math Olympiads revealed a critical gap: short-term programmes weren't enough.
"We realised we needed to invest in students deeply beyond short-term Olympiad training camps and programmes, because we needed to spend more time, and the answer was AOA, a three-year school where students can learn from the best while being surrounded by students with the same interests and motivations," Shanmuganathan explained.
About the Founders: Gaidi Faraj holds a PhD in African Diaspora Studies from UC Berkeley and previously served as Dean of Academics at the American Institute of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. He has extensive experience in African education, having worked at African Leadership University and managed $15M+ campus development projects.
Olympiad-Based Learning with African Context
The AOA curriculum integrates advanced STEM education with a holistic learning experience. Students engage in interdisciplinary projects, hands-on problem-solving, mentorship programs, and leadership development.
