During the summit, Rwanda’s Minister of ICT and Innovation, Paula Ingabire participated in a plenary session focused on how sectors like mining, AI, and manufacturing could drive nuclear energy deployment across Africa.
The session explored how energy-intensive technologies such as:
artificial intelligence,
data centers,
mineral processing,
and advanced manufacturing
will require stable and scalable electricity infrastructure in the coming years.
Rwanda has previously announced plans to explore Small Modular Reactors (SMRs), a newer form of nuclear technology designed to provide more flexible and scalable energy generation compared to traditional nuclear plants.
Kigali Hosts Africa’s Nuclear Energy Summit
NEISA 2026 has brought together policymakers, scientists, regulators, and technology leaders from across Africa and beyond. The summit is being organized in collaboration with institutions including:
the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA),
the OECD Nuclear Energy Agency,
and the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA).
The event reflects growing interest among African countries in nuclear energy as demand rises for digital infrastructure and industrial development.
