The National Bank of Rwanda (BNR), in partnership with the Rwanda ICT Chamber, has opened applications for the FinTech Innovation Hackathon 2026, inviting innovators to develop solutions that address challenges in Rwanda's financial sector.

The initiative aims to support financial innovation, promote financial inclusion, and contribute to the country's ongoing digital transformation efforts.

Building Solutions for Rwanda's Financial Sector

According to an official announcement from BNR, the hackathon seeks to encourage developers, entrepreneurs, and innovators to create practical solutions for real-world financial challenges.

The competition aligns with Rwanda's Financial Sector Development Strategy (FSDS) 2025–2029 and the National FinTech Strategy 2024–2029, both of which aim to strengthen the country's digital financial ecosystem and expand access to financial services.

Participants will be expected to develop solutions in several key areas, including:

  • Strengthening savings mobilization and financial resilience

  • Expanding access to inclusive and responsible MSME credit

  • Advancing cross-border payments and financial connectivity

  • Enhancing access and innovation in digital insurance

Opportunities for Innovators

Beyond the opportunity to solve real challenges, participants will compete for financial awards and a trophy.

The organizers also note that selected innovators may gain access to a structured pathway into the BNR Regulatory Sandbox, a framework that allows financial technology solutions to be tested under regulatory guidance before wider deployment.

The hackathon is open to innovators, developers, entrepreneurs, and problem-solvers interested in shaping the future of financial services in Rwanda.
