Applications Open for NSRI Summer Research Hackathon 2026

Students interested in research, technology, and innovation can now apply for the NSRI Summer Research Hackathon 2026, a five-day virtual research competition organized by the National Student Research Institution (NSRI) in collaboration with The Insilico Lab and YRI.

The event will take place from July 13 to July 18, 2026, and aims to provide students with an opportunity to develop original research projects while gaining practical experience in academic research and scientific writing.

Making Research More Accessible

According to NSRI, the hackathon was created to help students access research opportunities regardless of their location, background, or previous experience.

The organization, which describes itself as a student-governed nonprofit supporting student research worldwide, has built a community of more than 16,000 aspiring researchers across over 40 countries through research programs, competitions, and training initiatives.

Participants in the Summer Research Hackathon will work independently to develop an original research paper within five days. No prior research experience is required, making the competition accessible to beginners as well as students looking to strengthen their research skills.

Six Research Tracks Available

Participants can choose from six research categories:

• Health and Life Sciences

• AI, Data Science, and Computing

• Engineering and Technology

• Physical and Chemical Sciences

• Environmental and Earth Sciences

• Social Sciences, Humanities, and Policy

The competition encourages students to explore real-world challenges and develop evidence-based solutions through structured research and academic writing.

Judging, Awards, and Recognition

All submissions will undergo an initial review process, with the top 100 entries advancing to evaluation by PhD-level judges and industry experts. From there, the top 25 participants will be selected to present their research during a live virtual Grand Finale scheduled for July 25, 2026.

The competition currently offers a baseline prize pool of $1,000, distributed as follows:

• First Place: $600

• Second Place: $300

Organizers note that the prize pool may increase depending on participant registration numbers.
