AI Is Making Cyberattacks More Dangerous. Is Africa Ready?

According to INTERPOL's African Cyberthreat Assessment Report 2026, AI is linked to 55% of reported cybercrime across Africa. The report, published on August 3, 2026, draws on information from 36 African countries and describes cybercrime as an increasingly industrialised and borderless ecosystem.
The financial impact is growing too. INTERPOL reports that cybercrime-related losses in Africa have more than doubled since 2024, reaching $484 million. AI-facilitated scams, credential theft and automated social-engineering campaigns are among the threats driving the increase.
East Africa faces a particularly important challenge, with INTERPOL identifying the region as a hub for mobile-money fraud and infrastructure-targeted ransomware.
The Threat Is Becoming Harder to Spot
AI does not need to invent an entirely new type of cyberattack to cause serious damage. Its real advantage for criminals is speed, scale and persuasion.
AI can help produce convincing messages, automate phishing campaigns and create synthetic identities. Criminals can combine genuine personal information with fabricated details to make fraudulent identities appear legitimate.
That changes the security challenge. A suspicious email may no longer contain obvious warning signs. A fraudulent identity may include enough real information to pass basic checks. And an attack that once required significant manual effort can potentially be repeated at much greater scale.
Africa Needs to Build Defence at the Same Speed
The answer is not to slow digital transformation or avoid AI.
Instead, cybersecurity needs to become part of digital transformation from the beginning.
Businesses need stronger authentication, secure software development, employee awareness, continuous monitoring and tested incident-response plans. Banks, telecom operators, technology companies and law-enforcement agencies also need stronger mechanisms for sharing information about emerging threats.
INTERPOL has highlighted the lack of real-time data sharing between banks, telecommunications companies and law enforcement as a major weakness in the fight against financial fraud.
AI can also become part of the defence. Security teams can use it to analyse alerts, identify unusual behaviour and accelerate investigations.
The race is no longer simply AI versus cybersecurity. It is becoming a race between AI-powered attacks and AI-powered defence.
For Africa's rapidly digitising economies, preparing now could make the difference between containing the next attack and suffering its full impact. The cost of stronger cybersecurity may be significant, but the cost of discovering a vulnerability after criminals exploit it could be much higher.
