AI in Journalism Webinar to Explore Responsible Reporting and Newsroom Innovation

AI Quick Summary

  • Artificial intelligence is transforming journalism, offering new opportunities but also raising ethical concerns.
  • A virtual webinar titled "AI in Journalism: Reporting It, Using It, Questioning It" will be held on July 9, 2026.
  • The webinar is co-hosted by Africa AI Literacy, AI Salon, and Qhala Trust.
  • It will feature experts Nyambura Maina, Shi Kang'ethe, and Wakanyi Macharia.
  • The discussion will cover responsible AI reporting, AI tools in newsrooms, bias, ethics, and AI's impact on the creative industry.

Artificial intelligence is changing how journalists research, write, and share stories, creating new opportunities while raising important questions about ethics, accuracy, and accountability. As AI becomes more common in newsrooms, media professionals are increasingly looking for guidance on how to use these tools responsibly.

To support these conversations, Africa AI Literacy, AI Salon, and Qhala Trust will host a virtual webinar titled "AI in Journalism: Reporting It, Using It, Questioning It" on July 9, 2026, bringing together experts to discuss AI's growing impact on journalism and the broader creative industry.

Exploring AI's Role in Modern Journalism

The webinar will feature three speakers with expertise in artificial intelligence, journalism, and AI ethics:

  • Nyambura Maina, Founder of Voices of AI in Africa

  • Shi Kang'ethe, Freelance Journalist and Communications Strategist

  • Wakanyi Macharia, Head of African AI Research and Ubuntu Ethics at Inclusive AI Lab, Utrecht University

According to the organizers, the session is designed for journalists, editors, content creators, and other media professionals seeking to better understand how AI is reshaping the media landscape.

Participants will explore topics including:

  • Responsible and critical reporting on artificial intelligence.

  • Using AI tools to improve newsroom workflows.

  • AI bias, fairness, and accountability.

  • Ethical considerations for journalists and content creators.

  • AI's impact on journalism and the wider creative industry.

Why the Discussion Matters

AI-powered tools are increasingly being used to transcribe interviews, summarize documents, analyze large datasets, and support content creation. While these technologies can improve efficiency, they also raise concerns about misinformation, transparency, copyright, and the responsible use of AI-generated content.

As AI adoption continues to grow across Africa, understanding both the opportunities and challenges of these technologies is becoming essential for media professionals. Events like this webinar help equip journalists with practical skills while encouraging thoughtful discussions about the ethical use of AI in storytelling and news production.

Looking Ahead

The webinar will be held virtually on July 9, 2026. Organizers encourage journalists, editors, content creators, and anyone interested in the future of AI and media to register and take part in the discussion.
