How is AI technology made?

Did you know that by 2025, over 30% of outbound marketing messages from large organizations will be synthetically generated? This is predictions by Gartner. Inc. But how does this actually work? How can machines think and write like humans? Let’s dive into the basics of how these amazing machines operate.

In summary,
Do you wonder how artificial intelligence is made?

Imagine a child growing up. At the start, they don’t know much. But as they interact with people and learn from their experiences, their knowledge grows, and they can do incredible things. Machines learn in a similar way through a technique called “Machine Learning.” They are provided with lots of specific information to enhance their abilities.

These machines aren’t born with all the answers; instead, they learn based on what you want them to do. For instance, if you want a machine to translate languages, you feed it language-related data. If you want it to take pictures, give it more images. To imitate voices, provide it with various audio samples. Before they learn, a special program (model) or algorithm is designed for them. This program learns from the information it receives and then uses that learning to perform different tasks.

These programs are made by tech experts (programmers). After they’re trained using information, others can use them too. When a request is given to the program, it uses its knowledge to craft a response. Some well-known examples of models include GPT models used to make tools like ChatGPT and other tools that utilize the OpenAI API, Llama 2 from Meta, KinyaGPT by Digital Umuganda (which turns written Kinyarwanda into spoken words), and many more. The most commonly used programming language to create these models is known as Python.

What are some negative implications for advancement of AI?

This leads to unintended actions that result in harm to different aspects and even leads to engaging in unlawful activities such as hacking into systems, spreading misinformation, being used in deepfakes, and fostering discrimination.

Impact on Employment: As this technology progresses, it will replace numerous jobs currently performed by humans. This is because these machines can function independently without requiring human involvement. Those at risk of job displacement include supervisors, decision-makers, individuals in repetitive tasks, and various other roles.

Challenges in Decision-Making: In the movie “I, Robot,” robots are assigned critical roles that can potentially jeopardize human lives. Their perspective differs from that of humans, leading to conflicts. In the movie, robots were tasked with safeguarding people, yet they perceived humans as a source of problems. In an attempt to ensure safety, the robots decide to confine people to their homes.

Erosion of Human Relationships: As reliance on technology grows, meaningful human interactions could diminish. Technology’s ability to converse like humans might lead to a decline in genuine conversations among people.
